Race Report-
Husband and wife take first and second at Raceway Park Senior Briggs kart race.
By Robin Ervin
June 1 2008
Taking a break from his #99 Microstock, Tom Ervin joined his wife Robin at Englishtown’s Raceway Park Sunday racing their back up kart. Starting from last place in the first heat race, Tom Ervin won the heat with a motor that was blowing up during the final laps while wife Robin finished 3rd after starting 6th. The field was inverted for the second heat allowing Robin Ervin in the #6x to take the early lead from the pole spot. She held off her husband’s spirited challenges for the lead for four laps until a bobble and spin in one of the corners allowed Tom Ervin in his #7 to take the lead. The #6x recovered but not before she was passed by another kart. She went on to finish a close third behind the #6. Tom Ervin went on to win. This was the first time that Robin had ever led a race for a lengthy period of time.
In the feature, the Ervins started on the front row. Tom was the fastest on the gas at the start and beat his wife’s #6x into the first corner. A few laps later, he had opened up a comfortable lead, while his wife fought a fierce battle to keep second place from the #6 kart. Tom Ervin won the feature by a straightaway with wife Robin coming in second place just ahead of the third place finisher. This was the first time Tom has raced at Englishtown’s Raceway Park road course this year and this is the best career finish ever for Robin Ervin, who has been racing her Briggs powered kart at Englishtown since 2003.
